VAN MORRISON: ASTRAL WEEKS WILL NEVER GO AWAY
As I write about Van Morrison’s “Astral Weeks” album I am reminded how much it has influenced pop culture. As Martin Scorsese said it influenced the first fifteen minutes of Taxi Driver. Philip Seymour Hoffman and others have commented on how much “Madame George” influenced their lives. Bruce Springsteen refers to the album continually. So what is the point? The point is a neglected, ignored, out of touch for the times piece of music that single handedly appealed to those who were mostly in touch in 1969 and beyond. Much like Van, they saw a personal message in the music. That is, they saw another vision in Van’s work of what America was and should become. Volume 2 of my 5 volume Van Morrison biography comes out next year. Look for it.
